Early diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer can extend life

Baba Health Tips

There are no warning signs of early prostate cancer. Once a tumor cause the prostate gland to swell, or once cancer spreads beyond the prostate.

The following symptoms may happen like frequent need to urinate; especially at night, difficulty starting or stopping a stream of urine, weak or interrupted urinary stream, leaking of urine when laughing or coughing, inability to urinate standing up, painful or burning sensation during urination or ejaculation and blood in urine or semen.

Recent research published in Daily Mail states that new prostate treatment will benefit 10,000 people a year and this can extend life by 15 months if given as soon as cancer is diagnosed.

Current National Health Service (NHS) guidance in UK holds back the drug until after standard hormone therapy has failed. Men in Scotland can already get it early and now English health chiefs are expected to adopt the same policy in 2016.

Campaigners have long been calling for a change to the policy.

According to Angela Culhane, Head of prostate cancer UK said: “each and every time the drug is not available for a month, at least 500 men lose out on a potential extra year of life.”

Decisions about prostate cancer treatment are fraught with such mystery. Every year, about 220,800 American men receive a diagnosis of the disease, but 33 % to 50 % of all prostate cancers are not dangerous, and most of those who have the disease do not die from it.

Now, an excess of new diagnostic tools aimed at distinguishing the aggressive cancers from the sluggish ones. Genomic Health co-founder Dr. Steve Shak put it that “tests help tell us which ones are the bad guys,” are becoming available, and more are in development.
