Ferino Calou was sentenced to 33 years in prison for the murder of Cedric Matombe. He was also sentenced to ten years in prison for raping the girlfriend of the victim. But he will serve the longest sentence of 33 years in prison. The sentence was passed by Judge, Joseph Marie Benjamin.
Ferino Calou, a fisherman of 33 years old, was charged with killing a 17-year-old teen and raped the girlfriend of the victim, also aged 17. He had pleaded guilty at the opening of his trial.
The drama took place on the 7th of November 2010 in Le Bouchon around 8PM. The assistant superintendent, Manoj Seebaruth, principal investigator of the case, had been called to the witness stand. He produced and read the statements of the accused made to the police. The day of the tragedy, Ferino Calou confessed: “Mo aksepte. Se mo mem ki finn touy enn zenn garson ek viol enn zenn tifi lor laplaz Le Bouchon.”
On the 7th of November 2010, the fisherman said that he went to the beach to watch the tide. There, he saw the two teenagers heading for the woods “Lamem mo finn fer lespri pou atak sa garson-la ek gagn relasion ek sa tifi-la.”
He argues that he had a crowbar in his possession and quietly approached the young lovers. He hit Cedric Christopher Matombe on the neck several times. The latter collapsed to the ground.
The defendant said he tried to scare the girl by hitting her with the crowbar but she fainted. He then dragged her into the woods and raped her. Ferino Calou said he took care to conceal the body of Cedric Christopher Matombe behind a rock and covered it with straw. He also hid the weapon under a tropical tree.
Ferino Calou also apologized to the court: “Mo regrete saki mo finn fer. Mo demann lakour pardonn mwa. Mo fami pe pas mizer ansam ek mwa. Mo dir la sosiete pardonn mwa.”
Ferino Calou, father of four, spent 1,925 days in detention. He was defended by Rishi Bhoyroo while the prosecution was represented by Medhaven Armoogum.
