He will remain in custody until Thursday, June 23. The Filipino sailor who had been arrested following the sinking of MV Benita off the beach at Le Bouchon appeared in court in Mahébourg on Monday 20th of June. The police objected to his release on parole. An interim charge of “assault with aggravating circumstances” was brought against him.
An incident on board of the Liberian ship was the cause of a change in direction before ending up on the reefs at Le Bouchon. An argument broke out between two Filipino seamen, one of them was seriously injured.
The alleged assailant who appeared in court on Monday was locked in the engine room and would have cut the ship’s navigation system, pushing it to drift. Thus the MV Benita was dangerously close to Mauritian coast before failing on the reefs in the southeast of the island.
