Massive explosions took place in a very crowded place in Baghdad (district of Karrada) on late Saturday. According to Iraqi police, the terrorist attack was claimed by the Islamic State group in the city. The targeted area was rather busy with shoppers late at night as it is the holy month of Ramadan.
The bombings in Karrada have taken about 125 lives and left over 187 people injured so far. The attack is also the deadliest in Iraq this year.
The Prime Minister of Iraq, Haider al-Abadi, was met by stormy protests while visiting the badly affected shopping area on Sunday.
The US said that this attack will strengthen its initiative to assist the Iraqi government in its fight against IS.
Several cars were bombed which caused serious damage to buildings and the explosions even led to a massive fire.
Many of those killed were children and a clear-up operation is already under way in Karrada district.
