The inquest established after the death of twin sisters Kayla and Kiara Donald in a fire continued in Rose Hill Court on Friday 8th of July. The father of twin sisters, Kurt Donald David testified before the magistrate Dinya Mooloo. The skipper told what happened on the evening of 14th November 2013 at his home in Residence Chebel.
“My wife turned on the fan because it was hot,” said David Kurt Donald. It was in the living room, where he fell asleep. At one point, he woke up and felt a burning smell. At that time he heard a noise coming from the room of his two daughters. He headed to the room and saw that the fan in the Pacific brand was on fire.
The father rushed into the kitchen to fetch water and control the fire. But it had already spread in the room. Besides, there was a blackout, he said. His wife came out of their homes shouting. Neighbors were alerted and called the fire department. The police was able to remove the bodies of the girls from the room only after the fire was under control.
Besides the loss of his children, David Kurt Donald estimated the value of the damage at more than Rs 500 000. In his opinion, the fan is the cause of the incident because he saw it on fire though he was in good condition .
Mohamed Riyaaz Maulabux, Station Officer in Coromandel also filed. He says that when he arrived there, the fire had spread to every room of the house. His main objective was to save the twins but he had trouble locating them due to water accumulation. When he finally found them, he saw that the mattress was completely burned.
Regarding the cause of the fire, the fireman is clueless where the fire started.
